From Age-ing to Sage-ing by Schachter-Shalomi & Miller.

They call it ‘a revolutionary approach to growing older.’ How to change yourself from an irrelevant member of an ageing society into a sought-out sage; an elder of the community.

Through a process Shalomi calls ‘spiritual eldering’ he describes how many people because of their advanced age no longer felt they could contribute to their community and instead had become merely a burden on it.

Sound familiar? The secret of performing the turnaround from useless to useful, from meaningless to meaningful is to regard oneself as a successful survivor of life. Shalomi calls it ‘harvesting your life’. You’ve done it, you’ve arrived at old age and experienced an entire lifetime. You have only to harvest it and share it with the upcoming generations, he says, in order to become a sage, a wise elder of the community.

Shalomi outlines the many ways you can make this happen. He provides multiple examples of older women and men who have already done it, transformed themselves by their actions and their insights into wise elders for their extended families and communities. And in the process have harvested their own lives and are reaping the benefits of ageing and sageing.

It’s not about becoming some sort of religious wise person. Shalomi  is urging in the spiritual eldering movement which he founded,  as the subtitle of his book suggests: a revolutionary approach to growing older. Some fascinating ideas for everyone to explore in whatever way we choose.

I think I might try it.  Me, a wise elder, a sage. Why not? How about you?
